Sermons in German

Rev. Brauer mastered German. Some knowledge undoubtedly came from growing up in a household with a German speaking grandmother and parents who spoke English and German. There were several opportunities during his career to conduct German services and preach German sermons.

One opportunity came while living in Utah near the end of WWII. There were a significant number of German prisoners of war located in Utah and many were affiliated with the military supply facilities in and near Ogden. (Refer to the following book for details: Allan Kent Powell, Splinters of a Nation - German Prisoners of War in Utah, University of Utah Press, 1989.) Near the end of WWII, Rev. Brauer was contacted to conduct German church services for the POWs

in the Ogden area, which he did until the prisoners were repatriated.

In addition, he occasionally conducted German church services during his early career. However, with his period of service at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Symco, Wisconsin that became a requirement. That congregation had a number of senior members who grew up speaking German and the church offered German services once a month for their benefit. That is how most of the German sermons included here resulted.

Thanks to Ryan Owens, a German instructor, the sermons included here were converted from original manuscripts to a standardized format.

(Note: The sermons delivered from 1949 and after were most likely delivered in Symco, Wisconsin, since St. Mark Lutheran Church held German services once a month for some time after Harold Brauer became minister there.)
